Volunteer
Street Sense is always looking for volunteers!

In particular, we need help with:

  • Writing
  • Editing and copyediting
  • Layout (We use InDesign)
  • Photography
  • Graphic Design
  • Fundraising
  • Grant Writing
...But all volunteers with a desire to help the homeless get off the streets and into financial independence are welcome.

If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail Koki Smith at editor@streetsense.org and mention your skills and interests, or call (202) 347-2006.

You can also come to our monthly volunteer orientation. It is generally held the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Street Sense office. Please call ahead to confirm.

INTERNSHIPS

We also offer a limited number of internships for students interested in getting their hands dirty with all aspects of running a small, nonprofit newspaper.

Street Sense interns cover news around D.C. and the suburbs, including events with the D.C. mayor and on Capitol Hill. They help edit and proofread stories, take photos, update our Web site and assist with paper layout. As a Street Sense intern, you have the opportunity to leave a real mark with your work.

And the work will leave a mark on you. As a Street Sense intern, you’ll learn that vendors are the soul of our paper and get to know people who challenge any assumptions you may have had about homelessness.

Your writing for Street Sense will reach far beyond Washington: we regularly contribute content to the Street News Service, a weekly service run by the International Network of Street Papers, an association of about 80 street papers around the world. Stories on SNS reach an audience of nearly 300,000 in North America and nearly 32 million globally.

Interested? Please send a resume, three to five clips and a letter explaining your interest in Street Sense to Koki Smith at editor@streetsense.org or call (202) 347-2006.
