Intern
“I love Street Sense!” – Mary Krulia, Spring Intern (2009)
Street Sense offers a limited number of internships for students interested in getting their hands dirty on the front lines combating homelessness and poverty in our nation’s capital with a small non-profit organization. We offer two types of internships: a non-profit management program and an editorial/journalism internship. Both programs last for one college semester.
Non-profit Management Interns:
Management interns participate in the administration of a widely recognized non-profit organization in the heart of Washington DC. These interns will learn to manage essential functions within the non-profit world such as volunteer recruiting and training, fundraising, donor relationships, grant writing, marketing and record-keeping. Ideal candidates should be interested in seeking careers in non-profit organizations after graduation.
Please contact Allen Hoorn at manager@streetsense.org for information on how to apply.
Editorial Interns:
Editorial interns cover news around D.C. and the suburbs, from going to hearings at City Hall to visiting homeless shelters to interviewing local celebrities. They help edit and proofread stories, take photos, update our website and assist with paper layout. As a Street Sense editorial intern, you have the opportunity to leave a real mark with your work.
You may also specialize within this position and work as a photo-journalism intern. The position is relatively similar, but you will focus more on telling the story through your images and caption information, occasionally with an additional writing component. You will also coordinate with other interns and volunteers to collaborate on articles, adding strong visual support. Editing your photos for press is also a responsibility accompanying the position.
Interested? Please send a resume, three to five clips and a letter explaining your interest in Street Sense to Mary Otto at mary@streetsense.org
For people interested in graphic design and layout, send a resume, cover letter and work samples to Eric Falquero at ericf@streetsense.org
